Post Frame Buildings

Post Frame Buildings, built by one builder

If you want a large, open building that is easy to insulate and finish, post frame construction is worth a close look. Engineered wood posts stand along the walls, trusses span the full width, and girts and purlins carry the steel siding and roof. The result is wide bays with few interior posts and deep wall cavities for insulation. In Colorado the engineering does the heavy lifting: the trusses have to carry the snow load where the building sits, the posts and footings have to resist wind and frost, and the floor has to cope with expansive clay.

Behind Colorado Barn Builders is Quality Garage Builders, a licensed and insured general contractor in Parker with more than 25 years of construction experience. We build post frame buildings in every town within 100 miles of Parker, from Aurora and Highlands Ranch to Loveland, Falcon, Fort Morgan and Woodland Park. One builder does it all: design, engineering, permits, site prep, posts set in the ground or on brackets on a concrete foundation, trusses, steel, doors, insulation and interior finish. Our own work includes a 60x80 post frame speed shop with wood posts and trusses, insulated walls, tan steel siding and big open bays.

How it works

How a post frame building job works

  1. 1

    Free quote and site visit

Tell us what the building is for. We visit the site, check access, slope, soil and drainage, and give you a free quote.

  2. 2

    Design and engineering

We lay out the post spacing, truss span, eave height and doors, choose ground-set posts or a foundation with brackets, and engineer the building for your site.

  3. 3

    Permit and site prep

We handle the county or city permit, then grade and compact the site so water drains away from the building.

  4. 4

    Build and finish

We set the posts and trusses, sheet the roof and walls in steel, hang the doors and finish the inside, with an update every week.

  • “I am so appreciative of the quality, responsiveness, and value that Mike Fowler and his crew performed on completely remodeling and expanding our kitchen including moving walls. He did it in a timely manner, provided progress updates often and finished the job in record time. We get compliments all the time on the quality of the work and how our kitchen has been completely transformed. He coordinated or did himself all the carpentry, electrical, appliance installation, cabinets, and countertop installation after we approved the plan he drew out for us. I also used him to add a shower to my laundry room, cut down a huge tree in my yard, and put a new face around my fireplace. I would highly recommend Mike for ANY remodeling work you are considering for your house. His prices are competitive too”

Questions

Post Frame Buildings FAQs

What is the difference between a post frame building and a steel-frame building?

The difference is what carries the load: a post frame building stands on engineered wood posts and trusses, with steel siding and roofing fastened over wood girts and purlins, while a red-iron or light-gauge steel building is carried by a steel frame. Post frame is simple to insulate and finish inside because the wood framing takes fasteners and insulation easily. Red iron suits very wide clear spans and some commercial uses. We build both and help you pick the one that fits the use, the site and the permit.

How is a post frame building engineered for Colorado snow and wind?

For the ground snow load and wind exposure at its exact site, which the county sets and which rises with elevation. Posts go below the local frost depth or onto brackets on a foundation that does, and on the windy plains and the Palmer Divide the post embedment, bracing and door framing are designed to resist uplift. On expansive clay we build a compacted base and slope the grade away from the walls.

How much does a post frame building cost?

It depends on the size, eave height, doors and how finished the inside will be. A post frame storage building and an insulated, heated shop or home are very different jobs, and the snow load, wind exposure and site work at your property change the engineering. We walk the site and give you a free quote.

Do post frame buildings need a permit in Colorado?

In most cases, yes. The county issues the permit on unincorporated land and the city inside town limits, and most want engineered plans for the snow and wind at your site. Acreage subdivisions may add HOA or covenant rules on size, height and siding. We check your parcel, provide the engineered plans and handle the permit.

Is a post frame building the same as a pole barn?

A pole barn is the classic, simplest form of post frame: posts in the ground, steel outside, built for storage, hay and animals. Post frame is the engineered method behind it, and it is also used for homes, heated shops and commercial buildings, with posts in the ground or on brackets on a concrete foundation. If the building will be finished and used every day, you are looking at post frame.
