Horse Barns & Stables
Horse Barns & Stables, built by one builder
On a horse property east or south of Denver, a barn takes a beating most buildings never see. Wind off the plains slams doors and works siding loose, a spring storm on the Palmer Divide can bury the roof in wet snow overnight, and the clay under the aisle swells and shrinks until the concrete cracks. Inside, horses and wet bedding put moisture in the air that condenses under a cold steel roof and drips into the stalls. A good horse stable is built around all of that: a pad that drains, framing and doors made for the wind, and air that keeps moving with the barn shut tight.
We're a licensed and insured general contractor in Parker with more than 25 years of construction experience, and we build horse barns and equine barns on acreage within 100 miles, from Elizabeth, Kiowa and Franktown to Black Forest, Peyton, Longmont and the foothills. One builder handles the whole job: the stall layout, engineering for your site's snow and wind, the permit, grading and the pad, the aisle and apron, and the barn itself. We finish it with stalls, tack and feed rooms, lean-to wings, venting, lights and water, and you get a progress update every week until the horses move in.

What's included
What goes into our horse barns & stables
- 01
Center-aisle and shedrow barns
Stalls on both sides of an aisle wide enough to lead one horse past another and run a tractor through for chores, or a shedrow row of stalls that open under a long lean-to porch.
- 02
Stalls, tack and feed rooms
Box stalls laid out for your horses, Dutch doors to the paddocks, a tack room we insulate and line so leather stays dry, a feed room that shuts tight against mice, and a wash stall on concrete with a drain.
- 03
Lean-to wings
A lower lean-to wing along one or both sides for run-in shelter off the paddock, hay, the horse trailer or the tractor, roofed and sided to match the barn.
- 04
Indoor riding arenas
Clear-span arenas with no posts in the riding area, attached to the barn or freestanding, with kick walls along the rail and a base we excavate, compact and grade so it drains.
- 05
Ventilation and condensation control
Ridge and eave venting, a cupola if you want one, and roof insulation with a vapor barrier, so moisture and ammonia leave the barn and the steel doesn't drip on horses or hay.
- 06
Site work, aisle and water
We grade the pad so snowmelt runs away from the stalls, pour the aisle and apron on a compacted base, and trench the water line below frost depth so the hydrant works in January.

- 3
Site prep, posts and concrete
We clear and grade the pad, over-excavate and compact where the clay calls for it, set posts or pour footings below frost depth, and pour the aisle, wash stall and apron.
- 4
Build, finish and walk-through
We frame and steel the barn, hang the doors, vent it, build the stalls and rooms, and run lights and water. Then we walk the finished barn with you before the horses move in.

“Mike is a true professional in every way. Versatile, reliable, well skilled, and extremely knowledgeable. Easy to work with and a hard worker. His pricing is reasonable and his estimates for his work were spot on. I trusted him completely, as I am an absentee owner and could not be on site to oversee progress. He gave me updates and photos. Home project · HomeAdvisor review
“I am so appreciative of the quality, responsiveness, and value that Mike Fowler and his crew performed on completely remodeling and expanding our kitchen including moving walls. He did it in a timely manner, provided progress updates often and finished the job in record time. We get compliments all the time on the quality of the work and how our kitchen has been completely transformed. He coordinated or did himself all the carpentry, electrical, appliance installation, cabinets, and countertop installation after we approved the plan he drew out for us. I also used him to add a shower to my laundry room, cut down a huge tree in my yard, and put a new face around my fireplace. I would highly recommend Mike for ANY remodeling work you are considering for your house. His prices are competitive too”

“Mike has done my entire unfinished basement and his work ethics and willingness to work with changing design needs is exceptional. Mike's patience and quality of work is exceptional. His only goal is to ensure that customer is happy and he doesn't hesitate to redo things if customer wanted differently. I was very happy with his work and did recommend to a friend who is doing his complete basement. he is very affordable versus some of the crazy quotes we got.”

Questions
Horse Barns & Stables FAQs
How do you build a horse barn for Colorado wind, snow and soil?
We engineer each barn for the site it sits on. The roof is designed for the ground snow load your county sets, which climbs fast with elevation, so a barn near Monument or Elbert gets more roof than one near Brighton. On the plains and the Palmer Divide we anchor the frame against uplift and brace the big doors for the wind. Under the barn we over-excavate and compact expansive clay where needed and grade water away, so aisles and stall floors don't heave.
How much does a horse barn cost?
It depends first on the number of stalls and the size of the building, then on what goes inside: tack and feed rooms, a wash stall, insulation and how much of the floor is concrete. An indoor arena is a big part of the cost on its own. Site work matters too, from clay that needs over-excavation to the length of the water line and a drive a horse trailer can turn around on. We walk your land and quote it for free.
Do I need a permit for a horse barn in Colorado?
Usually, though the rules depend on where your land is. Inside town limits the city issues the permit, and on unincorporated land in counties like Douglas, Elbert, El Paso, Arapahoe or Weld the county does; some counties exempt true agricultural buildings on qualifying land but still want a site plan and setbacks. Zoning and HOA covenants in acreage subdivisions can also limit the barn's size, color and how many horses you keep. We check the rules for your parcel and handle the permit for you.
Can you build an indoor riding arena?
Yes. We build clear-span arenas with no posts in the riding area, either attached to the barn so you can ride and do chores without crossing a snowy yard, or freestanding to keep arena dust out of the stalls. We excavate, compact and grade the base, line the rail with kick walls, and add windows and lights. The roof is engineered for your site's snow load like the rest of the barn.
Do I need a full horse barn or a loafing shed?
It depends on how you keep your horses. If they live out on pasture most of the year, an open-front loafing shed set against the wind gives them shelter with a lot less building. If you want stalls to bring horses in, tack and feed under the same roof, a wash stall or a dry place for the farrier and vet, a barn earns its keep. Many properties use both, and we can plan them together.
